For over a year, before I invented this medium of weaving together color plates, I dyed and wove together strips of cotton and linen fabric into wall hangings, that hung from irregularly shaped tree branches. I chose colors that had a certain resonance with memories of places I'd traveled to. For instance, there was a specific type of grayish green that I'd only seen in New Mexico, and an unusual deep greenish blue that I'd seen in deep water between Vancouver and Victoria. For titles, I'd pore over maps to find the names of towns or geographical features that sounded as if they belonged to that landscape and no other. This exploration I made into color and landscape using fabric laid the groundwork for my later work with color plates. Often it's the rarity of just one or two colors that decides for me what each landscape will represent. |
