Veduta means view in Italian. In the series of Veduta weavings, I explore how systems of color can evoke memories of certain places or even impressions of places where I've never been.
The first Veduta was a study of the different treatments of landscape by two artists. |
Hieronymus Bosch and Giovanni Canaletto were separated by time and distance, but mostly by their respective apprehension and embrace of the physical world.
The Flemish Bosch created religious and moral allegories, often with characters in landscapes, or Heaven-scapes or Hell-scapes. |
Even in his most idyllic works, the natural world still seems corruptible and brittle.
But Canaletto gilds the seediest buildings and slimiest canals of Venice with charm and mystery. Though his paintings show the city past its prime, theres still a joyfulness in the play of light bouncing off the water. |
