Veduta 3 - Virginia, Scott Bodenheimer 1994, woven color plates, 5" x 12", 13 x 30cm
"Veduta" means "view" in Italian. In the series of Veduta weavings, I explore how systems of color can evoke memories of certain places or even impressions of places where I've never been. Veduta 3 - Virginia recalls views from driving along the highway rising into the Blue Ridge mountains, when I took a trip in 1985 with friends to go see buildings designed by Thomas Jefferson, in and near Charlottesville. For this picture I used images from French Impressionist landscapes by artists such as Cézanne, Monet, and Pisarro.
