Veduta 7 - California, Scott Bodenheimer 1994, woven color plates, 5" x 12", 13 x 30cm
"Veduta" means "view" in Italian. In the series of Veduta weavings, I explore how systems of color can evoke memories of certain places or even impressions of places where I've never been. Veduta 7 - California is based on a memory of the beach and cove at Carmel, California, with the bluff off to the north with one of the holes for the famous Pebble Beach golf course. For this picture I used images from French Impressionist landscapes by artists such as Cézanne, Monet, and Pisarro.
