Veduta 13 : Texas, Scott Bodenheimer 1998, woven color plates, 12" x 60", 30 x 152cm
“Veduta” means “view” in Italian. In the series of Veduta weavings, I explore how systems of color can evoke memories of certain places or even impressions of places where I've never been.
This work is composed of nineteenth century French Impressionist landscapes, but in assembling them I was trying to depict one of those brutally hot August days that we have in southeast Texas. Those sorts of days when the live oak trees, isolated on the plain, look black against the blue-white sky. I chose the proportion of the picture to stress the seeming endlessness of the prairie.
