Veduta 19 : France, Scott Bodenheimer 1998, woven color plates, 5" x 16", 13 x 41cm
“Veduta” means “view” in Italian. In the series of Veduta weavings, I explore how systems of color can evoke memories of certain places or even impressions of places where I've never been. This work is composed of nineteenth century French Impressionist landscapes. In this work I wanted to evoke atmospheric perspective. Atmospheric perspective is a function of the volume of air between the viewer and a distant object, the relative humidity of that air, the dust in the air, and the angle of light that illuminates the water vapor or dust. Light hitting the water vapor or dust scatters or refracts. Shorter and bluer wavelengths tend to refract more than the longer red wavelengths, which is why the sky itself is blue, and why distant features like mountains appear bluish.
